Jan 30 Banana Bread

Wednesday January 30th

Centers for the day:
art center
book tent
table setting & food
blocks

The kids started out in the food/table setting center. They were given water to add to their play. There was a small pitcher & a tea pot the boys took turns pouring water for each other and Anneclaire. We did have a couple spills, but that was to be expected :). It's just water after all, right?

Here Riley is intent on not only eating his corn, but cutting it with his knife :)

After they were good & hydrated, the boys went to read in the
book tent center. They spent the rest of Center Time reading books.

Project Time began by reading The Unbeatable Bread by Lyn Hoopes. Another great library find. The boys were very excited to make Banana bread. Here's the recipe:

Banana Bread recipe

1/3 cup butter

2 tbs raw sugar

2 bananas

2 eggs

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking powder

2 cups flour (i used spelt, but any whole grain flour would be yummy)

chocolate chips (we used 1 cup)

The main thing is to not over mix the batter. Bake at 350 for 40 min.

Once again, the boys were great at waiting their turn to measure the ingredients. We went over the recipe together and I took each ingredient out of the cupboard/fridge one at a time, asking them if I'd got the right ingredient. When it came to "banana," I grabbed an apple. They laughed at me and pointed to the bananas. We played the same game when measuring. They got pretty good at telling me which contained the flour, salt, and sugar. :). We had a wonderful time baking bread together. Of course we had to sample some for snack!

Cleaning up

Train table fun

Our carpet time is getting longer & more what I expected, each week :). Here, Riley is dancing as we sing the primary "Snowman" song. All three are getting really good at looking at the dancers in the "Dance" book, and imitating their movements and poses.

One of the poses the dancer is making a funny face with his hands around his mouth. This is the boys' rendition :).

Snack time

More Carpet/movement pictures...a little "ring-around-the rosies"...

Outside Time: despite the snow, the sun was out, so we ventured for about 10 minutes. Riley & Anneclaire rode in the trailer, behind my bike, and Carsten rode his own bike.

Carsten was pretty intent on riding our bikes to see the horses. No, it wasn't that nice outside :).

Other highlights
ASL: we worked more on "spin" "dance" and "jump", as we added a couple new signs, "bread" & "banana". Riley is really starting ot take an interest in the sign language. So is Anneclaire, though her fine motor skills can't keep up with the boys just yet. It will come.
Free time: has become a part of our curriculum. Going from activity to planned activity, I've found that the boys need 10 min once or twice a session to "do their thing." It has helped them focus when it's time to do something new. Today, they chose to play with their trains. While Carsten was busy making tracks in the carpet, Riley had two of the trains connected magnetically, flying them through the air. Fun. :)
